IDIOMATIC PAIRS'- 'Cặp' thành ngữ



Ví dụ mẫu:

Giải nghĩa thành ngữ:

1. Length and breadth: if you walk/drive/travel the length and breadth of the place, you go in or though every part of it, usually looking for something. We can also say that we search, look or hint high and low when we are trying to find something that is not easy to find.- khắp mọi nơi.

2. Spick and span: a place that is spick and span is very clean and tidy.- ngăn nắp, ngọn gàng.

3. Bits and pieces: small things that don't cost much money. We can also say odds and ends- đồ lặt vặt, các thứ linh tinh.

4. Pros and cons: advantages and disadvantages/ good points and bad points - những thuận lợi và bất lợi.

5. Safe and sound: in a situation or place where is no danger - an toàn.

6. Down and out: a person who is down and out has no money and no home, and lives rough, sleeping on the street - thất cơ lỡ vận, cùng đường, trong quyền anh có nghĩa là đo ván.

7. Ins and outs: the rules and the way something works or is organised- những chi tiết (của một vấn đề), theo ví dụ 7 ở trên thì the ins and oust có thể hiểu như "hiểu rõ công việc". Ngoài ra cụm ins and ous còn có nghĩa những chỗ lồi ra, lõm vào, chỗ ngoằn ngoèo ( của một nơi nào).

8. Sick and tired:  if you are sick and tired of something, you are angry because it happens all the time. - ngấy đến tận cổ.

9. Up and about/ around (US): out of bed and feeling better after illness. - trở lại sức khỏe bình thường (sau cơn ốm)/ đã khỏi bệnh và có thể đi lại được.

10. Wear and tear : something that is showing signs of wear and tear is not in a very good condition because it has been use a lot. - hao mòn và hư hỏng(vì sử dụng).

11. By and large: generally, for most of the time - nhìn chung, nói chung.

12. Back and white: written on paper, in the form of letter, document, etc- giấy trắng mực đen.

13. Song and dance: if you make a song and dance about something, you complain about it in an annoying and un-necessary way.- lời nói có tính chất lẫn tránh, câu giải thích đánh trống lảng.

14. Ups and downs: if you have your ups and downs, you experience a variety of situations that are sometimes good or somtimes bad. - sự thăng trầm.

15.  Move Heaven and earth : a person who is prepared to move heaven and earth for something is very determined to get what they want, and will therefore do anything to get it. - khuấy trời đảo đất, dùng đủ mọi biện pháp, xoay sở đủ trò.

16. High and mighty : a person who is high and mighty thinks that they are more important than other people, and this attitude is reflected in their behaviour and attitude. - vô cùng kêu ngạo.

17. Cheap and cheerful : something is cheap and cheerful is not expensive and of reasonable quality. it os often used to describe wine and restaurants. - ngon mà rẻ.

18. Fair and square : in a way that is clear and fair, so that no one can complain or disagree.- lương thiện và thẳng thắng, công bằng, không úp mở, không khéo léo.

19. Alive and kicking: still existing not gone or forgotten, especically when this is surprising, or living and healthy or active, especically when this is surprising. We can also say alive and well. - vẫn còn sống khỏe mạnh, và hoạt động tích cực.

20. Hard and and fast (rule): hard and fast rules are rules that people must obey. - nguyên tắc cứng rắn, nguyên tắc bất di bất dịch. Hard and fast nghĩa là cứng nhắc ( nghĩa bóng).
